Yomi Fan Art: Grave Stormborne

Grave Stormborne, wind warrior, from the card game "Yomi" by Sirlin Games. Yomi is a neat little game that's kind of like Street Fighter 2 or Mortal Kombat, but in card game form. Grave is a badass who carries around a sword that he never uses, but he doesn't really need to anyway because he can punch people in the face with lightning, and so forth. A dot featuring a woman with a hot-pink face, blue hair, and angel wings is located outside the Toledo School for the Arts. A white feline with green teeth and eyes that reflect the Huntington Center sign can be found outside the arena on the corners of Jefferson and Huron streets.

"When people click on them, they'll immediately get a sense of place," Ms. Stucker said. "They'll look at the list and say 'Oh yeah, I forgot about that place.' "

Remember that You Are Here dot that I mentioned in the last post? Well here's a couple pictures of it being installed. Sweet. This version is the one complete with the QR code; you can scan it with a smart phone for information about the location's history. Neat!

Looks like the warm spots lost a little bit of their luster in the printing process, and unfortunately that color seems to blend into the sidewalk a little. I dunno though, that has a kind of cool effect... I'll have to swing by to see it in person soon.

My submission for Toledo's "You Are Here" public art project. This image will be printed at 3' x 3' and appear outside of Toledo's historic Ohio Theater.

Opening in 1921, the Ohio Theatre’s first feature was the Douglas Fairbanks film The Mark of Zorro. The Price of admission was 25 cents for adults, and 15 cents for children.

I like to imagine the excitement of that Toledo audience as they took in Fairbanks’ swashbuckling performance for the first time. Even today, watching a copy of the film downloaded from an internet film archive, I felt a giddy thrill as I watched Zorro make fools of his corrupt foes, one by one. It’s easy to envision that audience, seeing the same action projected onto the big screen nearly a century ago, feeling the same thrill.

Super Caricature Bros. 3

It's been quite some time since I updated this blog on the regular. I'm still here! The artwork mill is still churning and the Thrilling Tales of Adventure are still being thrilled. I've been posting most of it on my Facebook fan page over the past year (incidentally, you can subscribe to that here), but this blog is a resource that I'd like to use a little more frequently too.

Here's a trio of brothers who I drew some gift caricatures for recently:

Drawing caricatures of people who are related is an interesting process to me. I doubt I'd have assumed these three were brothers if I'd just seen them walking together one random day.

I was trying to be very conscious of my use of light in these three caricatures, in part solely as a way of trying something new, but in part to see how a light source can suggest something about a subject's personality. What do you think--does it?

Some cool usage here (click images to enlarge). Seeing your work in print or on the web is one thing; seeing it on a billboard is another entirely. Still gives me a pretty cool feeling when I drive by.

Blaggie Awards

This job for the April 1st issue of Newcity had a 24 hour turnaround, and given the time constraints, I'm mostly satisfied with the results. Not having time to get away from my work for a while, then come back and reassess it in a more objective frame of mind is a challenge, particularly with (non-retail, obviously) caricatures, but I think everybody's favorite disgraced Illinois governor turned out well!

Any readers in Chicago? I'd love to get a photo of the print version if you've got a copy.

Emperor in Stone, Ruler in Disguise

The Barn Owl, also known as the Ghost Owl, also known as the Death Owl, also known as the Hobgoblin Owl, also known as the Monkey-Faced Owl is such a strange, sublime-looking creature to me. It's one of those animals that I look at and feel almost has to be evidence of intelligent design, somehow.

Buried But Breathing

Shirt design for the band BURIED BUT BREATHING. I've been making an effort to bring more traditional media effects / texture into my work lately and am digging the results.

More pictures on the way once they get printed! Pretty psyched to walk around wearing some of my work.

Here is Antonio Pollaiuolo's interpretation of the Lernaean Hydra. No disrespect to mister Pollaiuolo, but I for one would rather meet his version in a dark alleyway.

When the Walls all Fall

For the new album Holy Toledo by Ohio-based rapper A-Laz. Tried mixing up the style a little for this one, looking for a more grafitti-influenced, gritty look. Using more of a mix between digital and traditional media, and feeling really good about the results.

My fan art of Street Fighter 3's Twelve has been chosen as one of the winners for Capcom's Third Strike Art Contest! My piece will be appearing in the upcoming re-release of one of my favorite games, Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, for PS3 and Xbox. Awesome!

You can see the other winning entries for Twelve here. I'm totally blown away and humbled by the other two winners--Brian's in particular is really stunning.

The winning entries for Remy and Urien are also up. There's a lot of great stuff to look at, so check it out.

I particularly love Jen's painting of Remy. What a great pose, with so much subtlety and character to it. Remy looks thoughtful and pensive, but ready to spring into action at any moment, like a knife balanced on its edge (or something). Inspiring stuff.

Google Art Project

In case anyone hasn't heard about this yet, I highly encourage you to check out one of the coolest new websites around, http://www.googleartproject.com. It's a little like google street view, except that it's inside, and it happens to be inside of a bunch of awesome museums. And instead of looking at buildings and trees, you're looking at masterworks, and zooming in on them close enough to see individual brushstrokes, in high resolution, blown up to the size of your hand.
